One of the great things about being on holiday is getting to sample the local delicacies. So, what is the area around Scalp Cottage known for? Whatever season you decide to visit, there’s some fantastic regional produce to try.
Scalp Cottage is located in Holme-next-the-Sea, which is a short walk or drive from Hunstanton, Thornham, Titchwell and Brancaster. Norfolk’s culinary scene has grown in recent years – now there’s a plethora of food markets, restaurants, pubs, and cafes to choose from.
In Hunstanton, there’s now the regular West Norfolk Seasonal Food & Drink Festival, organised by The Norfolk Deli. The Sandringham Estate also arranges big food and gift fairs that are worth setting aside a day for.
In terms of places near the cottage to try some great tasting grub, we also recommend: The Lifeboat Inn Thornham, the Thornham Deli, Gurneys Fish Shop in Thornham, The Lodge in Old Hunstanton, the White Horse in Holme and The Old Town Beach Cafe in Old Hunstanton for breakfast (it’s dog-friendly, kid-friendly and offers lots of vegan / vegetarian / gluten-free choices too).
What delicious food can you expect to try? Many places sell samphire, known as ‘sea asparagus’, which is perfect simply cooked and served with a good knob of butter! Norfolk is one of the best places in the country for seasonal asparagus, which is available from late April to the end of June. The county is also home to Colman’s Mustard, a range of tasty local cheeses, and provides a selection of microbreweries too.
If you enjoy seafood then Cromer crab is a sweet-tasting Norfolk specialty, as are Brancaster mussels. Many local pubs will sell excellent fish cakes, fish pies and more – so why not try the catch of the day while you’re in the area? Plus, a trip to the seaside isn’t complete without sampling some of the local fish and chips.
